Olive-sided Flycatcher has these characteristics:
- Still perching
- About same size as robin
- Smaller than robin
- Head crested
- Mostly dull green or brownish green
- Streaks (long spots)
- North summer (June through August)
- Wood habitat
- Perched high (generally above middle of trees when perched or foraging)
- Short forays (flies out from perch and returns)
- Smooth, clear calls (can be imitated by human singing voice or whistling)
- Melodious song (pitch variable; smooth, sweet, or rich quality; pattern generally complex)
