There are many more gems to be found in papers from the 70s and 80s.\u00a0 A while ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/disk-based-global-illumination-in-renderman\/\">I pointed out<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.pixar.com\/library\/\">Pixar&#8217;s online paper library<\/a>, which includes a lot of &#8220;golden oldies&#8221; (as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.pixar.com\/library\/SoftCaching\/index.html\">good new stuff<\/a>).\u00a0 I just saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codersnotes.com\/notes\/papers-please\">this great list of old papers<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codersnotes.com\/\">the codersnotes blog<\/a>. I heartily concur with Kayamon&#8217;s assessment of the value of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codersnotes.com\/\">ACM digital library<\/a> subscription, though I wish ACM would find a way to go the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlham.edu\/~peters\/fos\/overview.htm\">Open Access<\/a> route.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just a matter of expense; the registration wall adds a huge amount of friction to the process of finding information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old graphics papers don&#8217;t get enough respect nowadays; for example, Porter and Duff&#8217;s original paper is still the best place to get a good understanding of alpha blending (which too many people get wrong nowadays).
