Happy <a href=\"https:\/\/web.law.duke.edu\/cspd\/publicdomainday\/2021\/\">Public Domain Day<\/a>, all! &#8220;The Great Gatsby&#8221; and many more now enters the realm of works we can all (finally) legally build upon, without permission or fee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">It&#8217;ll be interesting what happens come 2024, when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act\">the first Mickey Mouse movie<\/a> is to be freed up. In the meantime, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.law.duke.edu\/cspd\/publicdomainday\/2021\/pre-1976\/\">imagine what could have been<\/a> (the Mary Poppins movie!).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Artistic works should not remain locked away for nearly ever (imagine if Shakespeare&#8217;s works or the Bible were still under copyright). Copyright is meant to help motivate creative people. Extending copyright after the fact does not increase that motivation &#8211; it&#8217;s just <a href=\"https:\/\/cjrogers.com\/ebooks-copyright-and-rent-seeking\/1058\">rent seeking<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s one of the best days of the year, most every year.
