Here&#8217;s the triage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High Performance Graphics 2020&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highperformancegraphics.org\/2020\/call-for-participation\/\">call for participation<\/a> is up. Key due date is April 16th (but you need to register the paper 3 days earlier than that). Retweet <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HPG_Conf\/status\/1207549102063403013\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:3974391\">high-res scan of a Nefertiti sculpture<\/a> is now available. <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2019\/11\/13\/a-german-museum-tried-to-hide-this-stunning-3d-scan-of-an-iconic-egyptian-artifact-today-you-can-see-it-for-the-first-time\/\">The story of it being freed up<\/a> after a three-year effort is a good read, with a knee-jerk &#8220;we own it&#8221; attitude by the museum. I hadn&#8217;t heard of &#8220;the gift shop defense&#8221; before, and them carving a CC license in the base is pretty ironic, given how much they were defending not releasing it. He&#8217;s now <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmowenman.com\/\">pushing on the Mus\u00e9e Rodin<\/a> for <em>The Thinker<\/em>. The Nefertiti file is in OBJ format with textures &#8211; it&#8217;s pretty nice, 12.8M tris. Download from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:3974391\">the page<\/a> using the link in the upper right, despite what the text below says; you can also <a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/3d-models\/bust-of-nefertiti-foia-results-8c60faca6152405e9d35784efa8b9aa1\">view and download it on Sketchfab.<\/a>\u00a0<em>(thanks to Adam Marrs for the link)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Fascinating <a href=\"http:\/\/rgl.epfl.ch\/publications\/NimierDavidVicini2019Mitsuba2\">inverse rendering applications<\/a> with Mitsuba2&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/differentiable-rendering-d00a4b0f14be\">differentiable renderer<\/a> &#8211; see the video from 2:38 to 4:50 in particular. Code&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mitsuba-renderer\/mitsuba-data\/issues\/1\">not available yet<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Trying to explain ray tracing to your relatives during the holidays? Of course you are. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.developer.nvidia.com\/ray-tracing-essentials-part-1-basics-of-ray-tracing\/\">Here&#8217;s my<\/a> contribution to the cause (or with <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/rtx\/raytracing-essentials-part1\/cn\">Mandarin subtitles<\/a>), in good part based on Pete Shirley&#8217;s Intro to RT talk (see links at the bottom of the page). If you know of a good email text file viewer, please let me know.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m in the wrong field. People research the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QWbaOWXG7vk?t=21\">rubber pencil illusion<\/a>, about the only magic trick I learned as a kid. Research into the RPI is <a href=\"https:\/\/jov.arvojournals.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2193187\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.3758\/BF03205883.pdf\">here<\/a>, which conclude that the pencil&#8217;s appearance of rubberiness is affected by different factors. This so needs a good three.js demo.
