Talking with an academic, I learned one reason <a href=\"https:\/\/predatoryjournals.com\/journals\/\">predatory journals<\/a> flourish is that his university refuses to pay open access for articles they are publishing in established journals, since the university itself already pays the yearly subscription fee for these journals. So, if there&#8217;s funding for publishing open access available, it can only go to journals for which there&#8217;s no paywall, which are less-established and predatory ones.<\/li>\n<li>This is peculiar, <a href=\"https:\/\/patriciogonzalezvivo.github.io\/PixelSpiritDeck\/\">a mix of Tarot and shader code<\/a>. I can&#8217;t say I understand, but the WebGL&#8217;s nice, and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/patriciogonzalezvivo\/PixelSpiritDeck\/tree\/master\/lib\">the little shaders are on Github<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardcoregaming101.net\/tracing\/tracing.htm\">Stolen Images in Games<\/a> is a bit too comprehensive, but it&#8217;s a fun skim to see how various games were &#8220;inspired by&#8221; (i.e., ripped off) all sorts of sources, from Schwarzenegger to Escher. Note that there are six pages in total, it just keeps going&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>This is a cool, interactive way to show <a href=\"https:\/\/virtualart.chromeexperiments.com\/artists\/andrea-blasich\/sessions\/bull\/\">a virtual reality artist at work<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/01\/18\/netflix-fortnite-is-bigger-rival-than-hbo\">An older article<\/a>, but interesting that Netflix considers Fortnite a bigger rival than HBO.<\/li>\n<li>Not graphics, but I found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-china-cybertheft-su-bin\/\">this article on foreign hacking<\/a>\u00a0informative &amp; gripping.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/\">This is Colossal<\/a> has so much stuff&#8230; over the past few months I particularly liked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2018\/10\/sea-monsters-take-over-philadelphias-navy-yard\/\">the tentacle building<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2017\/10\/an-optical-illusion-tile-system-designed-by-casa-ceramica\/\">this forced-perspective piece<\/a> (I wonder if anyone&#8217;s been injured by it, though), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2019\/03\/japanese-kaiju-figurines\/\">this press conference<\/a>\u00a0is kawaii.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tile-1.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time to clear the link collection before GDC\/GTC &#8211; download some web pages for the plane ride.
