Get a taste<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/01\/2013-the-year-the-mystery-hunt-broke\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; this year&#8217;s was &#8220;easier&#8221;, in that a team solved it Sunday evening, almost\u00a053 hours after the hunt began. If you know the answers to <a href=\"http:\/\/muttsteryhunt.com\/puzzle\/luminance_shift\/\">this<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/muttsteryhunt.com\/puzzle\/jackson_pollock\/\">this one<\/a> (both quite graphics-oriented!), let me know, I got nowhere with them.\u00a0Yes, that\u2019s all the information you get, and your goal is to find a word or phrase somehow hidden in what you see. Using a supercomputer is entirely fine. I kept saying &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xbCWYm7B_B4?t=61\">Enhance!<\/a>&#8221; but it didn&#8217;t help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 15.0pt; margin: 7.5pt 0in .0001pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #292f33;\">There are many other amusing puzzles to poke at in <a href=\"http:\/\/muttsteryhunt.com\/\">this year&#8217;s collection<\/a>, such as massive tiled sudokus and flag color pie charts. Give it a look, it&#8217;s fun to see the sheer scope and warped brilliance of some of these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 15.0pt; margin: 7.5pt 0in .0001pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #292f33;\">I was able to help our\u00a0&#8220;small&#8221; team of 35+ to solve the last part of one cool puzzle (sadly, the link to it is dead!)<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>by<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/erich\/mysteryhunt\/roller_coaster.html?load=demo\/roller_coaster.js\">using three.js<\/a>. The puzzle itself is fun, it\u00a0was a few-hour-long solve for me, then some time writing <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Rt64Ob\">a three.js program<\/a> to help find the solution.\u00a0If you want to fast forward, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Rt64Ob\">find the final hidden word<\/a> if you can\u2026 (I couldn\u2019t \u2013 a teammate did; I&#8217;m an OK\u00a0puzzler, but sometimes forget the maxim, &#8220;look again, and again.&#8221; And, looking back on it four years later, I can&#8217;t seen the word now!)<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much of my weekend:\u00a0The MIT Mystery Hunt\u00a0is a yearly\u00a0giant weekend puzzle race\u00a0that has well over a thousand participants.
