Grab it now if you&#8217;re not a SIGGRAPH member. SIGGRAPH members always have Digital Library access to SIGGRAPH-sponsored conferences, even if not Digital Library subscribers, e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=2601097&amp;_sm_au_=iVV25TfRTPr0jbK6\">here&#8217;s the SIGGRAPH 2014 proceedings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>New term: <em>froxel\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; frustum voxel.\u00a0Alex Evans mentioned\u00a0it in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediamolecule.com\/blog\/article\/siggraph_2015\">his fascinating talk<\/a> in the Advances in RTR course; on page 83 he notes, &#8220;The term originated at the Sony WWS\u00a0ATG group, I believe.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/self_shadow\/status\/632342234856333312\">Diagram<\/a>. He&#8217;s semi-right that Shadertoy programs do\u00a0ray marching through froxels at their simplest; a speedup for Shadertoy is using the minimum distance-field distance found to any object as a minimum step size (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shadertoy.com\/view\/4llXDB\">line 126 of this demo<\/a>, most of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11998354@N07\/19990143333\/in\/album-72157654978049134\/\">they live-coded<\/a> during the wonderful Shadertoy studio workshop).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/21660559?fsrc=scn\/tw\/te\/pe\/st\/aquestionofutility\">Evidence<\/a> that patents appear to not spur research and innovation, even for big pharma. I like <em>The Economist<\/em>, as it tries to weigh the evidence for &amp; against some idea, vs. knee-jerking it one way or the other.<\/li>\n<li>Folklore 1: Jim Blinn confirmed that the teapot model was scaled\u00a0down vertically because it looked nicer that way, not that the pixels were non-square (incorrectly propagated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjbaker.org\/wiki\/index.php?title=The_History_of_The_Teapot#The_Teapot_DataSet\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerhistory.org\/revolution\/computer-graphics-music-and-art\/15\/206\">here<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11998354@N07\/20424362159\/in\/album-72157654978049134\/\">Jim &amp; 3D printed teapot<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Which reminds me: here&#8217;s my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11998354@N07\/sets\/72157654978049134\">random set of pics<\/a> from SIGGRAPH 2015, with captions.
