{"id":3804,"date":"2014-07-06T16:03:42","date_gmt":"2014-07-06T22:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/?p=3804"},"modified":"2014-07-06T16:03:42","modified_gmt":"2014-07-06T22:03:42","slug":"big-world-secrets-of-the-teapot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/big-world-secrets-of-the-teapot\/","title":{"rendered":"Big World, Secrets of the Teapot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re a member of SIGGRAPH, one perk is that you have access to the ACM Digital Library&#8217;s graphics related content.\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acm.org\/sigs\/volunteer_resources\/FY%202013%20SIG%20Member%20benefits-amended.doc\/view\">SIGGRAPH benefits document<\/a>\u00a0notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access to all ACM SIGGRAPH related content in the ACM Digital Library (This includes SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, and about 20 or more small conferences)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I learned where to find the list of\u00a020 small conferences, <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/sig.cfm?id=SP932\">it&#8217;s here<\/a>. And it&#8217;s not 20, it&#8217;s over\u00a0100. Admittedly, some of these symposia were run just once or twice, but I appreciate the access nonetheless. It&#8217;s a big world! Wandering through this list is fascinating, and a little nostalgic &#8211; &#8220;Ahh, remember when that topic was a hot new trend? Whatever happened to it?&#8221; Honestly, it&#8217;s exciting to see so many areas where graphics has an effect. If I had students looking for research topics in graphics and no strong preference about what area they wanted to explore, I&#8217;d point them at this page as a source for\u00a0inspiration, dry as it looks.<\/p>\n<p>I asked about this list because I had a problem accessing some NPAR papers through the DL. As usual, I drove around the damage by using <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\">Google Scholar<\/a> and finding the papers I wanted elsewhere, for free. To the ACM&#8217;s credit, they responded to my query about whether I was supposed to have access to NPAR, since I had access in the past. I was indeed, and they fixed the DL the next day. So, the takeaway is that if you find you don&#8217;t have access and think you should, let the ACM know at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:acmhelp@hq.acm.org\">acmhelp@hq.acm.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I found this just peculiar, on <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=1180098&amp;CFID=372522932&amp;CFTOKEN=50284485\">this page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/teapots.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3805\" src=\"http:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/teapots.png\" alt=\"teapots\" width=\"685\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/teapots.png 685w, https:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/teapots-300x60.png 300w, https:\/\/www.realtimerendering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/teapots-500x100.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seriously? The secrets of the teapot cannot be fully revealed? Who (the heck) would not give reprint permission? Or was it just a matter of someone being unreachable, and the default being the text couldn&#8217;t be reprinted?
