It turns out that GPUs are particularly good at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/How_bitcoin_works#Bitcoin_mining\">mining<\/a> bitcoins, compared to CPUs: check out <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/Mining_hardware_comparison\">this chart<\/a> &#8211; the key factor is Mhash\/sec (though Mhash\/Joule is also an entertaining concept).\u00a0The most interesting page (for me) at the site is their explanation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/Why_a_GPU_mines_faster_than_a_CPU#Why_are_AMD_GPUs_faster_than_Nvidia_GPUs?\">why a GPU is (so much) faster than a CPU for this task<\/a>. Not a shocker for anyone reading this blog; we all know that GPGPU can rip through certain tasks at amazing speeds. What&#8217;s more interesting to me is how and why one IHV&#8217;s GPUs are considerably faster than the other&#8217;s.
