Incidentally, I think the journal/conference reversal is quite specific to computer graphics (in fact, maybe even specific to the SIGGRAPH conference); other areas of computer science mostly follow the same convention as other fields where journals are the more prestigious place to publish and conferences have a lower bar and are often used for student and preliminary work.</description>
